UNOFFICIAL GAME SUMMARY

What a game ! Both sides should be proud of their efforts. Somers showed great heart and determination coming back from a 14-0 first half deficit but fell just short 14-12 to very disciplined and large Greeley team.

In the first quarter, it looked like Greeley was going to control the game as they showed a power running attack and a strong defense to forge a 7-0 lead. Somers tried to respond with a march of their own with a 20yd Newman to Dipaolo pass and then a Kevin Winters run down to the Greeley 30. It looked like Somers was back on track but a couple of penalties killed the drive to end the 1st quarter.

In the second quarter, it seemed that the Somers D would turn the tide and had Greeley facing a 2nd down and 20 in their territory. Greeley suddenly showed a passing game which connected for a 30 yd play and eventually ran in another TD to make the score 14-0 . Instead of getting down, Somers dug in deep , found another gear and started to show Greeley what they were really made of .

It started with a deep punt by Debellis pinning Greeley down on the 15 . The Somers D picked it up a notch and stopped Greeley on 3 downs to force the punt to Nick (or Chris ? ) Gonzalez who ignited the team with a big return down to the Greeley 30 . A Tepp run up the middle, a Newman pass to Von Heyn , and a Winters 4 yd run for a crucial 1st down put Somers on the Greeley 5 . Newman pushed the ball to the 1 on a QB keeper but was injured on the play. Luke Perito calmly stepped in as QB and pitched a beautiful ball to Winters who scampered in for the score and gave Somers momentum into halftime trailing only 14-6 ( extra pt kick missed) .

The 3rd quarter was a slugfest where both teams went 3 and out on their first possessions. Somers mounted another march but was stopped at the 45 . Greeley was on the move but was stopped on 4th and 3 with a great tackle by Luke Perito in the backfield. Score remained 14-6 at the end of the third.

The 4th quarter momentum suddenly shifted to Somers as Nick Debellis intercepted a pass and ran 60 yd for the TD to make it 14-12. Greeley was on its heels for the first time all season and Somers started to turn up the heat as the D stuffed Greeley and the offense continued to pound into Greeley territory but could not get close enough to score. The defense came up big one last time and stopped Greeley with 1:44 left in the game allowing Somers a final chance at victory. With Newman hurt, Luke Perito's mobililty provided new challenges for the Greeley defense as Somers marched down the field to the Greeley 30. But Greeley's defense finally stiffened up and denied Somers on 4th down and 5 as time ran out.

Hearts may have been heavy but heads were held high as the Somers fans cheered their team on after the game ended knowing they played a tremendous game and things will be different when they meet again in the playoffs.
