Somers guts out big win beating Brewster 17-14

Posted Saturday, September 24, 2005 by Tony DeMatteo

Somers showed that it finally belongs in the top echelon of Class A by beating a very tough Brewster Bears team 17-14.

It looked like lighting would strike twice as Somers once again scored on the opening kickoff as Nick Gonzalez blazed through the Brewster D for a 75 yd TD and a quick 7-0 lead.

Somers though knew it was in for a fight as Brewster showed a strong running attack as well as a tough defense up the middle that would shut down the Somers offense for the entire first half. It looked like it would be a long night for Somers as Brewster marched up and down the field as the Somers D would bend but not break giving up only one TD and stopping the 2pt conversion allowing Somers to go into halftime with a 7-6 lead.

Somers looked like a different team in the second half as they made some defensive adjustments and shut down the Brewster running game . Somers appeared to be gaining control until Brewster stunned the crowd with a 60 yd punt return to take a 14-7 lead in the 3rd quarter .

Down but not beaten, Somers answered back and electrified the crowd with a 50+ yd pass from Matt Newman to Chris Gonzalez. Gonzo caught the ball about 20 yds downfield , started streaking down the sidelines and then juked a defender out of his shorts before scampering in the remaining 20-30 yds for the tying score. Kevin Winters also had some key end around runs to keep the Somers offensive machine moving and Brewster off the field.

The Somers D would then come up big in the final minutes as they kept the Bears pinned in their half of the field and then finally stripped the Brewster QB of the ball with Somers recovering with 1:30 to go.

Somers then pounded away at the Brewster D till they were stopped at the 1 yd line. With 6 seconds to go Nick Debellis trotted onto the field and kicked the winning field goal .

One other interesting note was the monstrous 60yd punt by Debellis in the first half which was reminiscent of the 70 yd kick Dan Agostino made against Brewster last year. Debellis' kick got Somers out from deep within their territory and gave the Somers D some room to hold of Brewster from scoring any more points in the first half.
