Giuntini powers Somers past Walter Panas

Posted Thursday, September 23, 2010 by Robert Lombardo

Behind three first-half touchdowns from senior fullback D.J. Giuntini, Somers (2-0) got out to a 28-6 halftime lead on visiting Walter Panas (0-2), and never looked back. The Tuskers went on to defeat the Panthers, 42-6, on Sept. 16.

Giuntini finished his stellar day with 144 yards rushing on 14 carries.

"D.J. carried the load running the ball," said senior quarterback Anthony Lombardo, who threw a touchdown pass to senior Rob Tomasulo and ran another TD in, "and they keyed on him, which opened everything else up."

Lombardo was 7 for 8 on pass attempts for 87 yards and had seven carries for 57 yards.

Backup senior quarterback Matt Maloney scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. Joe Lombardo had five carries for 52 yards, while Stefano Bicknese had three carries for 23 yards. Senior Kieran Donohue had one reception for 52 yards. C.J. Silva returned two kickoffs for 55 yards and Chris Rios returned three punts for 37 yards.

Senior Tom Campbell had an interception and 2-point conversion reception for the Tuskers. Chris Groton and Kevin Murray each had seven tackles apiece, while Rob Mendoza (six tackles), Colby Tragni (five) and Joe Hanley (four) also contributed defensively.

Somers' Tom Barcia went 4 for 5 on extra points.

Panas' lone touchdown was on a 3-yard run by Jeremy Guerrero.

Lombardo believes there is room for improvement as the Tuskers still had a few issues with fumbling the ball, which they have been focusing on improving through drills at practice.

"In both games (against Panas and Hen Hud) we did not play anywhere near our team's potential," Lombardo said.

In each of their first two games, Somers has been stricken by slow starts, before picking it up as the game wears on.

"We can't coast through the beginning of the game because teams will capitalize on that and it will hurt us later on," Lombardo said.

The Tuskers travel to Brewster on Friday, Sept. 24, while Panas hosts Horace Greeley.
