Unofficial review.....

Before the game even started you could feel a sense of calm in the Somers team during warm-ups like they knew they had this game figured out before taking the field. All they had to do was to stay focused, execute their plays and the rest would fall into place.

That feeling came quickly to reality as the ball bounced Somers way on the first play with Oneill bobbling the kickoff and getting pinned on their own 1 yard line. Three downs later an Oneill punt went for only 1 yard and suddenly Somers was on the 5 yard line and scoring on their first play with a 5 yd Matt Deiana run. Just like that, Somers was up 7-0 and the message was sent to Oneill about the kind of day they were going to face.

The next series for Oneill seemed like deja vu all over again where they were stopped cold in 3 downs followed by another weak punt leaving Somers knocking on the door again at the Oneill 30 yd line. Tom McGuire connected on a nice 18yd pass to Rob Rusotti but Somers eventually had to settle for a 20 yd field goal and a 10-0 lead.

David Totten kept Oneill at bay with a series of deep kickoffs and once again pinned Oneill inside their 20 yd line. A vicious hit by Frank Adamo and a QB sack by Rob Lombardo marched Oneill backwards inside their 10 yard line. A nice punt by Oneill may have put back Somers to the 50 yd line but that set up some running room for Evan Von Heyn who romped for 23 and 15yds before Rob Lombardo carried the load once inside the 10 for a TD and a 17-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

It wasn't until about the 9 minute mark into the 2nd quarter when Oneill made a first down and was finally into Somers territory. Ethan Tepp quickly shut down any hopes of an Oneill comeback by sacking the QB and forcing a fumble recovered by Dan Egloff.. McGuire quickly went to work by hitting Deiana for a 20yd TD pass and a 23-0 score.

Somers would have walked off at halftime 30-0 but a slashing 52 yd TD run by Deiana was called back on a penalty with a minute to go. Deiana could have easily added 75+ yards more to his totals if it was not for a few untimely penalties.

In the 3rd quarter , Von Heyn took charge sparking the Somers offense with a nice 20 yd run. Deiana finished up with a 13 yd TD score and a 30-0 lead. The defense continued to stay strong as Somers was able to rotate all of their team throughout the day. Names like Parlitsis, Angiello, Carson and countless others were being announced as they get experience which will be needed in upcoming games.

Somers topped off the day with a powerful 70 yd TD punt return by Von Heyn who outran and out-juked numerous defenders on his way to put Somers on top with a 36-0 final score.

The real test will come next week when Somers faces undefeated Ossining and their powerful running game.
