Somers Varsity survives Ernesto and looks good in scrimmage game

Unofficial game summary:

Even with the remnants of tropical storm Ernesto hanging around longer than everyone liked (I think it rained the ENTIRE time we were there ) the torrential rains and persistent winds did not seem to hamper the offense of the big red machine from opening holes and churning big yards against such notable powerhouses as John Jay, Nyack and White Plains.

Somers first series was against highly ranked double-A school John Jay. The Tuskers opened up on offense and grinded out numerous 5+ yard runs against a team which will make another run at the AA state championship this year. The blustery conditions and slick ball limited the passing attack but Somers did connect on a nice 30 yd TD pass which caught John Jay flatfooted. When it was John Jay's turn on offense , you could really see that it was a well oiled machine combining both crisp passing and a strong running game which Somers could not seem to stop. The only good sign here was that the defenses of Nyack and White Plains had just as much trouble trying to stop the John Jay juggernaut.

As the night wore on, Somers just kept getting better and looked dominating on both sides of the ball against Nyack and White Plains. On offense, the holes got bigger, the runs got longer and the passing got more consistent. On defense, Nyack was held on most plays to only a few yards a pop with just a couple of TD's resulting from a big play or two.

The culmination of the evening though was the Somers D completely stonewalling the White Plains offense throughout their series. There were several stops behind the line of scrimmage and the moment you thought White Plains had some daylight to run outside the linebacker and DB's quickly closed the gap to keep the gain to a few yards.

This was definitely an exclamation point to end the night and sends a message that Somers will be the team to beat this year in the Class A North conference.

Go Tuskers ! Beat Fox Lane !
